Absolutely everything conformed to the organic aesthetic of art nouveau, creating a building that feels alive and natural in every aspect. We can see the results of this in the Robie House of Chicago, completed in and widely considered one of Wright's masterpieces.

The Robie House is the definitive example of Wright's Prairie-style architecture, in which low ceilings, open interior space, and horizontal motifs were used to capture the essence of the Great Plains. Wright believed strongly that architecture should match its environment, so the Robie House was meant to fit seamlessly into the physical landscape of the Midwest, making this a unique example of Gesamtkunstwerk.

One of his main ways to do this was through natural light, and Wright placed a great amount of emphasis on the stained-glass windows he personally designed for this house. Wright designed everything in the house, including the furniture and light fixtures, and had a habit of physically joining components together. For example, the light fixtures are physically attached to the dining room table.

That's about as clear an example of integrated elements as you can get. Gesamtkunstwerk in architecture is something we generally find in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but there are later examples that carried on the tradition as well.

At 20 stories high, it was the city's first skyscraper, and one of the only buildings of this size designed in the theory of Gesamtkunstwerk.

Jacobsen meticulously oversaw every piece of this massive airport hotel. The stairwells, windows, and overall structure? The chairs, sofas, and fabrics? Individually designed by Jacobsen. The plates, cutlery, and ashtrays?

When the hotel opened, it served as one of the largest and most complete examples of architectural Gesamtkunstwerk in the world. The term Gesamtkunstwerk , which literally means ''total work of art'', describes a theory that the artist should control every aspect of their work to ensure the most unified aesthetic possible.

In architecture, this refers to a structure in which the architect has designed not just the building itself, but every element of the interior design in order to ensure absolute aesthetic harmony. Gesamtkunstwerk represents one of the most ambitious theories in art and architecture, but has produced some phenomenal results.
